About the Thoroton Society

The Thoroton Society is Nottinghamshire's principal historical and archaeological society. It was founded in 1897 and named after Dr Robert Thoroton who, in 1677, published the first history of the county. The membership is world- wide and includes individuals, libraries and museums in four continents.

As a member of the Thoroton Society you:

bulgrnx.gif (202 bytes) can enjoy a programme of lectures during the winter months, usually held in Nottingham and are on a variety of topics, historical, archaeological and architectural
bulgrnx.gif (202 bytes) can join in summer excursions to historical sites and noteworthy properties, both in the county and further afield, many not normally open to the public
bulgrnx.gif (202 bytes) will receive an annual volume of Transactions containing articles and reports on new historical research and archaeological excavations
bulgrnx.gif (202 bytes) will be sent a regular newsletter with details of recent activities and forthcoming events in the Society's programme
bulgrnx.gif (202 bytes) will have reference access to the Hallward Library at the University of Nottingham and the right to borrow from the comprehensive East Midlands Collection.
bulgrnx.gif (202 bytes) will be represented on a number of influential local and national organisations whereby the Society's voice may be heard more widely, especially in the fields of heritage and conservation.

For an additional subscription you may become a member of the Record Section and receive the occasional volumes of the Record Series. These are special editions of important local historical archives or the result of new research, and have recently included Ducal Estate Management in Georgian Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire: The Diary of William Gould, 1783-1788, The Sherwood Forest Map of 1609, the Diaries of Abigail Gawthern, The Diaries of Gertrude Savile and The Upton Constable's Accounts.

To join the society please download the membership form (available in Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat formats), print it out, complete and post it along with your subscription to the Membership Secretary at the following address:
